The Silver Lake Eagles (10-6) head 5 miles down Highway 24 to take on their close rivals, the Rossville Bulldawgs (10-6). Rossville just off a 64-57 loss on the road at Osage City this past Tuesday. The Dawgs look to shake things up and take revenge on the Eagles after losing the first War on 24 match up at Silver Lake in December. Silver Lake recently off a 73-45 road win against Wabaunsee hoping to keep the season alive and sweep the War on 24 series this season. In the first half, Silver Lake would start with possession to start strong out of the gate with an early basket on the right-elbow by Senior Elijah Lopez. Rossville would begin the game at a slow pace struggling with many of their first possessions. Silver Lake would continue to make shots within the paint pushing to at times an 8 point lead over the Dawgs. Late in the first half, the Dawgs would start to catch fire with shots from Sophomores Cameron Miller and Jakoby McDonnell along with Junior Kameron Badura. The Dawgs would battle back to a single possession margin at the break. Silver Lake ended the half with a 3 point lead over the Dawgs. In the second half, possession would trade back and forth between the foes keeping the game close early on. Junior Mason Jones would handle the ball often leading Rossville in rebounds throughout the half. On the other side of the court, Sophomore Dayne Johnson would help give Silver Lake up to a 6 point lead at times. Midway through the 2nd half, the tensions would become increasing higher after a controversial jump ball that ended in a slight push off by Rossville. The crowd would stay at a constant roar for the rest of the game. With a minute left, Rossville’s Kameron Badura would fight back to tie the game. Eagle’s Dayne Johnson would bring the ball back down and have a strong finish in the paint and would be fouled taking himself to the line to knock down the shot giving Silver Lake a 3 point lead. Rossville would take the ball back down the court before calling a timeout at 10 seconds to devise a plan to help bring the game back to a tie. The Dawgs would do exactly that inbounding the ball to Sophomore Jack Donovan who would hit Kameron Badura to nail a wide-open corner 3 point shot tying the game at 72-72. Dayne Johnson would miss the game winning shot sending the War on 24 into Overtime. Rossville’s Mason Jones and Kameron Badura would take control in Overtime helping the Dawgs to complete their comeback in an 87-79 War on 24 win. Rossville moves on to 11-6 setting up for their next game at home against the Wabaunsee Chargers (3-13). Silver Lakes drops to 10-7 and will continue on the road at the Rock Creek Mustangs (13-2). Central Missouri (16-4-2) and Washburn (17-3-1) beginning the NCAA Tournament with wins in the first round to force rematch in Second Round. Washburn winning against Ouachita Baptist and Central Missouri earning a win against Minnesota State. Washburn would have home field advantage with owning the top seed in the Region. Central Missouri strikes hot out of the gates looking to convert early on in the match. Washburn Senior Raegan Wells would handle the Jennies till midway through the 1st half with UCM goals by Ashleigh Martin and Andree Orcutt. The Ichabods struggling in the 1st with a goal deficit of 2-0 shocked hopes of the crowd. Washburn Head Coach Davy Phillips did not let this position on the game affect him or his team. With the beginning of the 2nd half underway, the Ichabods would start with small attacks down the sideline but not being able to convert with the Central Missouri defense stepping up. In the 62nd minute the Jennies forced a handball 35 yards out, Washburn took this as an opportunity to look for their first score of the match. The Ichabods did just that with a kick by Sophomore Lakin Rold placing the ball over the top to Junior Khloe Schuckman to finish the attack cutting the Jennies lead in half. Washburn shifted the tensions in the match showing their hopes were still alive. Washburn continued to fight with hopes fading late in the 2nd. In the final seconds of the 2nd, a corner would be given to Washburn Freshman, Mackinly Rohn who has a history of taking exception corner kicks. With her kick, the ball would be placed inside the 6 yard box where it would be bobbled around. With the outstanding abilities of Sophomore Aubrey Tanksley, she was able to get the ball in the back of the net with only 1 second remaining on the clock. This once in lifetime moment would send the Ichabods to Extra Time with the Jennies after fighting back from a 2-0 deficit. With the score even, it would be the matter of a single lucky shot by either team that would settle this long hard fought match. After the first 10 minute of extra time, no changes had occurred. In the second 10 minutes, possession would be back and forth between Washburn and Central Missouri. With time fading away, many thought this match would lead to a sudden death penalty kick shootout. That was until the 109th minutes, the ball would be kicked into the crowded box, UCM Goalkeeper Maddie Meehan who would attempt to catch the ball but would fall due to the rain that had been occurring. The ball would fall and bounce back up from Sophomore Jadyn Allen into a bicycle kick by Junior Khloe Schuckman to score giving Washburn their first lead of the match. Washburn would hold off Central Missouri in the final minutes of the game moving the Ichabods into the 3rd Round after being down 2-0 midway through the 2nd half. Washburn shocks Central Missouri with a 3-2 win in Extra Time. Central Missouri ends their season 16-5-2 while Washburn will look to continue their run against their rival Emporia State in their 4th matchup of the season. Central Missouri (Regionals - 2nd Round) #8 Ouachita Baptist (11-2-7) just off their GAC Tournament title looking to start off the NCAA Tournament with a win against the #1 seeded Washburn. Washburn (16-3-1) coming off a loss against Emporia State in the MIAA Tournament semifinal hoping to making a strong statement in the first match of the NCAA Tournament. Washburn reigns at the hands of Davy Phillips who is fresh of being named MIAA Coach of the Year along with reaching his 100th career victory earlier this season. Coach Phillips is just getting started and looking to continue at a title run with the Ichabods. Ouachita Baptist opened the match with immediate pressure on Washburn causing many miscues by the Ichabods. Washburn would work to battle the few mistakes made and counteracted the Tigers with 7 shots, with 4 of those being on goal. Washburn flipped the pressure on Ouachita Baptist at the midpoint of the 1st half. The Ichabods would be held at the end of the half 0-0. Washburn carried their momentum into the 2nd half with a strong attack down the line looking for many crosses into the box helping create opportunities for the Ichabods. The Tigers would continue to defend the attacks and begin to have many takeaways down the field into Washburn territory. Ouachita Baptist kept striving for one of their shots to convert, however Senior Raegan Wells would hold off the Tigers with a total of 5 saves on the night. Washburn would struggle after many missed opportunities up to the end of regulation leading to extra time. After a scoreless 90 minutes, Ouachita Baptist would kickoff extra time with an attempt down the field. The Tigers would turn the ball over to the Ichabods who would take control of the game from that point on. Washburn Junior, Khloe Shuckman, would take the ball herself down the sideline before cutting in looking for an attempt to cross. Schuckman’s cross was denied and deflected back to her off a defender which she used as an opportunity to take a shot and score in the 98th minute to give the Ichabods the lead. Washburn retained possession after kick off and would hold off the Tigers in extra time to advance to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. Ouachita Baptist (Regionals - 1st Round) Washburn started with high hopes coming into the season looking to bring home a title. Washburn has had a hard fought season, starting off on the road with 1-1 record in St. Louis. With having only 2 seniors on the squad, the Ichabods had to rely on their younger team to step up to the challenge. They did just that helping lead Washburn to 9 straight wins after the loss against UMSL before a draw against Northwest Missouri State. Senior Reagan Wells helped protect the Ichabods allowing only 9 goals the entire season. Wells would lead the team in minutes played with a total of 1,525 minutes played.
On the offensive side, Washburn created strong attacks on the goal every game accumulating a total of 195 shots with 111 of them on goal. Junior Khloe Schuckman led the Ichabods in shots with 38. Washburn recorded 34 goals on the season with 7 of those from Junior Ana Muruzabal. The Ichabods manage to accomplish many goals they throughout the regular season including reach #6 in the National Poll. The Ichabods would fight to the finish and claim their newest piece of hardware with the 2023 MIAA Regular Season Champion Title. Washburn celebrated according hoisting the trophy at home in Yager Stadium in front of the Ichabod fans. Washburn ends the regular season with an overall record of 15-1-2 and 9-1-1 in conference play. The Ichabods will start their postseason as the #1 seed in the MIAA Tournament next Friday at Yager Stadium. After a 1-0 shut out on Friday at Fort Hays State, the Ichabods looking to finish out their strong season at home in Yager Stadium versus Emporia State. With their win on Friday, Washburn was named the 2023 MIAA Regular Season Champions. Currently in the National Poll, the MIAA Champs sit in the #6 ranking. Washburn on a slow start to the match with many fouls by both teams. In the 17th minute, Washburn allowed their first goal in 3 matches by a shot from Alexis Cole. Washburn had harsh turn to the match in the 22nd minute when Junior Khloe Schuckman received a direct Red Card for unsporting behavior. Washburn would have to continue with only 10 players for the rest of the match. At the end of 45 minutes Emporia State would lead 1-0 going into the break. The second half Washburn would continue to battle with many shots on goal despite being down a player. Emporia State persistently attempted to pressure Washburn on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Washburn would not let another goal be scored with 4 saves from Senior Reagan Wells. The Ichabods were not allowed to capitalize on their attacks. #6 Washburn would fall to Emporia State 1-0 at the end of 90 minutes. Washburn ends their regular season 15-1-2 as the MIAA Regular Season Champions. The Ichabods will take the field again next Friday in the first round of the MIAA Conference Tournament in Yager Stadium. #8 Central Missouri (10-2-1) continues on road at #23 Washburn after a 1-0 win against Emporia State on Friday night. Washburn comes off a 2-0 home win against Missouri Southern. Washburn would off strong against the Central Missouri Jennies. Early in the half, a lateral pass from Junior Riley Wells in the 6th minute would convert with a shot from Khloe Schuckman that placed the ball in lower left side of the goal out of reach from the goalkeeper. Washburn would continue to attempt shots on goal but would be outshot the rest of the half by the Jennies. Central Missouri would have 4 shots however could not translate on the scoreboard. At the end of the half Washburn would keep their lead of 1-0. Central Missouri would push out of the gates in the second half with a fast attack allowing a failed attempt on goal by Junior Ashleigh Martin. This would be the only shot the Jennies would be allowed before Washburn took over. Junior Riley Wells and Freshman Mackinly Rohn would both have exceptional shots on goal that would be saved. Washburn would then turn to defensive mode to finish out the game.. #23 Washburn would go on to upset #8 Central Missouri 1-0 at the end of regulation. Central Missouri would end their road games on a 1-1 split, moving their overall record to 10-3-1. Washburn would end their weekend home stand with 2 wins advancing their record to 12-1-1 on the season. After Sundays win against the Jennies, Washburn would take hold of 1st place in the MIAA. Not only that Head Coach Davy Phillips would hit his career milestone of 100 wins on Sunday at Yager Stadium. Washburn heads to Central Oklahoma to continue their season on Friday. Central Missouri @ Washburn Gallery Getting off to a slow start, the Ichabods let in a Wayne State goal early in the 6th minute by Reagan Allen. From there it would be a heavily controlled match by Washburn. The Ichabods would get their first shot in the back of the net in the 26th minute from Junior Ana Muruzabal that was assisted by Junior Viviana Soto-Herrera to be the equalizer. At the half the score would be even at 1 each. To begin the second half, Washburn would strike early on in the 51st minute off a corner kick by Freshman Mackinly Rohn to Sophomore Aubrey Tanksley where she would finish the shot. The Ichabods would take the lead for the first time all match, however they wouldn’t stop there. The Bods continue to build on their lead by a goal from another Mackinly Rohn corner. This time, Rohn would get the ball to deflect off the Wayne State goalkeeper Hayden Wallace in the 73rd minute. Washburn would cap the match off with their final goal in the 83rd minute with a pass from Ana Muruzabal to Freshman Lindsey Maul that would nail a shot from outside the box to end the match with a 4-1 victory over Wayne State College. The Ichabods moving to 3-1 on the season will return to action next week on the road at Emporia State. Wayne State at Washburn Photos After starting off the season with a 42-21 victory against Lansing at home last Friday, the De Soto Wildcats looking for their second win in the Capital City against the Washburn Rural Jr. Blues. The Jr. Blues started off their season strong last week at home against Wichita East where they were able to defeat the Blue Aces 26-25. Tonight, the Jr. Blues opened the game after receiving the opening kickoff. Under the reigns of Senior Quarterback Branton DeWeese, the Blues were able to march down the field to the end zone where Junior Lafayette Thompson would score a rushing touchdown on the opening drive. The Wildcats would then open their first drive striking down the field with Senior Quarterback Carson Miller. Miller would march the Wildcats down to score on their drive to a touchdown by Senior Bennett Hutchinson. With mistakes on the De Soto offensive side, Junior’s King Leonard and Wilson Miller would both get an interception which would turn into two scoring drives for the Jr. Blues. Senior JC Heim and Sophomore TJ Minikwu would score rushing touchdowns on those drives. Lafayette Thompson would score a second touchdown of the night later in the game that be a pass from Branton DeWeese. Washburn Rural would take this game tonight 28-14 against the De Soto Wildcats where they would continue to 2-0 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 1-1. Next week, Washburn will head on the road to take on the KC Piper Pirates. De Soto will also stay on the road in the Capital City against the Topeka West Chargers. Sporting KC started off strong getting the crowd roaring at Children's Mercy Park. Willy Agada opened the game with an unassisted goal in just the 5th minute. Sporting would continue to keep pressure on the Sounders until they were able to strike back with a Jordan Morris goal in the 23rd minute giving the match a 1-1 score. The second half would be powered by Seattle taking over the game with 3 more goals from Jordan Morris in the 54th, 69th and 77th minutes. Sporting would fall to Seattle at home 4-1 bring SKC's record to 0-2-3, the Sounders would move to 3-1-1 on the season. In post game conference Peter Vermes explained how he felt the game went, "I thought our circulation of the ball was very good up until that point and we left it. We had players on the field that were doing too much with the ball. We lost too many balls in too many easy areas of the field and they took advantage of them." Peter Vermes later shared how he felt playing down a man after Ben Sweat's Red card in the 63rd minute affected the game, "There are some situations where, again, we could have played the ball forward. We went backwards. We actually let them press us. We actually set them up for the press." Johnny Russell was able to return for Sporting KC for the first time since injury off the bench in the 61st minute. He shared his thoughts about his return to the team,
"Physically, I feel fine. Obviously, it's not the way that I wanted to come back but it feels good to get back out there and get some minutes and get myself back to where I was before I got the injury. It's just a poor night all around for everyone." Next week Sporting KC (0-2-3) will be back in action on the road taking on Philadelphia Union (2-0-3) 6:30pm CST at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania. Sporting KC (0-2-2) is hoping to bounce back after suffering a 2 - 1 loss to FC Dallas this past week on the road. Sporting KC has been led by Forward Daniel Sallói who scored the team's first goal of the season early in the 11th minute of the game. Sporting KC is currently missing their captain Johnny Russell due to a hamstring injury suffered earlier this season. Russell is currently on a day to day basis hoping to get back soon. Sporting KC will have 2 other players questionable for Saturday's game: Alan Pulido (Knee) and Tim Leibold (Hamstring). Players out for the game include: Kortne Ford (Ankle), Logan Ndenbe (Hamstring), Kayden Pierre (Hamstring), Gadi Kinda (Knee), and Marinos Tzionis (International duty).
Saturday evening will mark Graham Zusi's milestone of his 400th career appearance for Sporting KC. Zusi is currently leads the MLS in 73 regular season assists among all active players. Along with that his 345 regular season appearance with a single club is the most in MLS history. Graham Zusi is currently going on his 15th season with Sporting which is an MLS record. This Saturday, Sporting KC will be back in action at home taking on the Seattle Sounders at 7:30 CST. Seattle (2-1-1) is coming off a 0 - 0 draw against LAFC at home. Sporting KC is looking to get their first win of the season at just their second home game. In recent matches between the two clubs, SKC has won 5 of the last 7 meetings with the Sounders.
